Being a dad is a full-time job, one that doesn’t come with a paycheck…but the reward is a lifetime of love. We set aside the third Sunday in June to honor dad, but are sometimes at a loss to find him the perfect gift. Fathers don’t always wear their hearts on their sleeves, but you can bet they look forward to their special day every year. If your kids are scrambling for ideas to show dad he is loved, think outside of the (wrapped) box and consider giving him an experience instead! The best gift is time spent with loved ones.
Here are some great activities to enjoy with dad…perfect for Father’s Day (or any day of the year)!
Make Brunch
Breakfast in bed is a time-honored Mother’s Day tradition, but dad doesn’t have to miss out on the delicious fun. Put together a brunch featuring his favorite breakfast and lunch foods. Younger kids will need a parent’s help, but we’re guessing dad won’t mind pitching in, too!
Play Outdoor Games
Head to the nearest park for some fresh air and sunshine; it’s the perfect place to play catch or toss a football around. Other dad-approved favorites include corn hole, badminton, or horseshoes. (Don’t have a set? We’ve just solved your gift-giving dilemma!)
Take a Hike
If dad’s the adventurous type and feels like lacing up his hiking shoes, explore the Great Outdoors together with a hike. The Black Hills are a mecca for hikers, with a large selection of trails ranging from easy to difficult.
Get Wet
Father’s Day usually coincides with the first hot days of summer; nothing is more refreshing than a cool dip in one of the area’s lakes. Don’t feel like traveling far? Fill up the backyard kiddie pool, set up the Slip ‘n Slide, or turn on the sprinkler and take turns dashing through it.
Go Bowling
If strikes and spares are dad’s forte, bowling will be right up his alley—especially if the weather doesn’t cooperate for outdoor fun. Even little ones can have fun bumper bowling.
Cast a Line
Angling for a less-strenuous outdoor activity? Grab the rod and reel and tackle box and head for the nearest lake, stream, or reservoir. If the fish aren’t biting, go ahead and humor dad over “the one that got away.” It’s his special day, after all…and mom will be none the wiser.
Have a Backyard Cookout
A lot of dads don’t know their way around the kitchen but turn into grill masters when charcoal or propane is involved. Haul out the grill and let him show off his skills with a backyard cookout.
Pitch a Tent
Camping is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors…even if you venture no farther than your backyard (a great idea for younger kids who haven’t experienced the joys of sleeping in a tent before). For a truly authentic experience, don’t forget the mosquito repellent and S’mores!
Go Miniature Golfing
The back nine is bound to be crowded, but dad can still break out a club and try for a hole in one (possibly through a spinning windmill). If kids have mastered the basics, plan a trip to the driving range instead.
Build Something Together
Dads are pretty handy when it comes to tools. Help him show off his woodworking skills by crafting a simple birdhouse together. If the kids are too young to handle tools, assemble a model car or airplane instead.
Pedal Off Into the Sunset
Riding a bicycle is a fun activity that provides lots of exercise. Head out to dad’s favorite cycling trail, or simply pedal around the neighborhood together. It’s a great way to work up an appetite, too!
Host a Family Movie Night
A family movie night is the perfect way to end Father’s Day on a high note! Stream your favorite film (or pop in a DVD if you’re old school). And of course, don’t forget the popcorn!
