Head
Helmets can’t work if not worn correctly. Refer to the Don’t Thump Your Melon tips below.
Feet
Wear proper shoes for each activity, and make sure they fit. When hiking wear sturdy, comfortable shoes. (don’t hike in flip-flops!) For other sports, children may need specialized footwear like cleats, skates, or boots.
Knees and Elbows
Knees and elbows often get scraped when young children are playing. They stick out so they are often the first to hit the ground. Pads for these areas are recommended for activities like beginning ice skating, snowboarding, rollerblading, and skateboarding.
Keeping Warm
Cold weather sports require warm clothing, but you may not need as much as you think. Experts recommend dressing in layers so you can remove clothing as your activity level increases.
