Here’s six ideas to get you started — both classic Black Hills and 250th-ready.

Visit the Shrine of Democracy

Nothing says America 250 quite like this granite quartet. In 2026, Mount Rushmore will host a spectacular fireworks display on July 3 in honor of the nation’s 250th birthday. Walk the Presidential Trail by day, settle in for the Evening Lighting Ceremony at dusk, then watch the night ignite. Tickets for this once-in-a-lifetime event are limited, so if you’re serious about attending this historical event, make sure to do your homework early. And if you can’t get tickets, don’t worry, there’ll be a watch party in Rapid City happening at the same time. But even without fireworks, Mount Rushmore remains a must-see and a powerful place to take the family.

Highway 16 Delivers

The iconic stretch between Rapid City and Mount Rushmore is packed with classic Black Hills attractions. Wild stops like Reptile Gardens, Bear Country USA, Old MacDonald’s Farm and more invite locals to experience something playful and unforgettable. Build a day around a few stops and check into season passes for locals. Many offer solid value if you plan to come back more than once.

Downtown Rapid City and Main Street Square

Rapid City is hosting Real America: America’s 250th Birthday Bash from July 2–4, 2026, complete with concerts, community parades, artisan markets and family-friendly fun. Expect festival stages, cultural exhibits, kids’ zones and displays honoring military members and first responders. The City will also be hosting a fireworks show and a drone show.

Slow Down at Custer State Park

Custer State Park offers a quieter way to celebrate at your own pace. Cruise the Wildlife Loop, plan a dock-side or shore-side fishing day (remember fishing licenses for any adults casting a line). Picture bison silhouetted against rolling prairie, a living symbol\ of freedom and frontier grit. Pair your park day with dinner or an arts walk in Custer for a perfectly balanced Black Hills experience.

Crazy Horse Memorial® is a Life-Changing Experience

Crazy Horse Memorial® offers a powerful and deeply moving addition to any Black Hills itinerary. The campus features world-class museums, Native American heritage performances and perspectives that linger long after you leave. Give yourself plenty of time to explore fully. There is always something new to discover at the Memorial. Especially for locals, come and check out the astonishing progress being made on the Mountain, and definitely stick around for a bite to eat at the Laughing Water Restaurant®.

Let History Come Alive

The Journey Museum tells the story of the Black Hills through Indigenous cultures, early pioneers and the powerful forces that shaped the region. Just outside, Memorial Park and the Berlin Wall Exhibit offer space to reflect on freedom and sacrifice, while the South Dakota Air & Space Museum near Ellsworth AFB highlights the people and innovations that protected our skies. And that’s only the beginning. The Black Hills are packed with museums worth spreading across an entire summer. Paleo fans can dig into the Geology Museum on the SD Mines campus or step back in time at the Mammoth Site in Hot Springs. The Tristate Museum is another family favorite in Belle Fourche that celebrates the rich historical stories of the region.

RAPID During the 250

Our friends in Rapid City are throwing America a birthday party you and your family won’t want to miss. The Real America Birthday Bash anchors America’s 250th birthday with three nights of downtown celebration designed for families and neighbors alike. Here’s the deets.

The Real America Birthday Bash brings America’s 250th celebration to the heart of downtown Rapid City with three nights of music, history, and hometown pride. Running the evenings of July 2 through July 4, the festival transforms Main Street Square and Memorial Park into a single, connected experience. With 6th Street closed between Main and Omaha, the space becomes a walkable corridor designed for easy flow, gathering, and lingering.

Programming is built to welcome every age and interest. Two concert stages will anchor the event, one at Main Street Square and another at the Memorial Park bandshell, featuring a mix of local favorites, regional standouts and headline performers. Families can spend hours in the Kids’ Zone with bounce houses, face painting, and balloon artists, while the Memorial Stage offers a quieter counterpoint through historical reenactments, spoken word performances and live readings. Interactive exhibits add a hands-on element, including a Touch-a-Truck experience with the National Guard and Air Force and heritage displays from civic organizations. An artisan marketplace rounds out the experience with curated vendors, crafts and a wide range of food and food trucks.

A designated open container program extends throughout the festival footprint and along Main and Saint Joe Streets from 4th to 9th, allowing visitors to enjoy beer and wine responsibly while supporting downtown businesses. Each evening builds toward a signature moment. July 2 features a patriotic parade, live concert, and drone show. July 3 brings a regional headline act and a Mount Rushmore fireworks watch party. July 4 closes with a headline performance followed by city fireworks, sending the nation’s birthday out in unmistakable Black Hills style.
