Crafts by Lyndsay Hedman
Turn a simple toilet paper roll and some yarn into an adorable little hat ornament! This easy, budget-friendly craft is a fun way to get creative with the kids and add a handmade touch to your Christmas tree or holiday garland.
Materials Needed
- Toilet paper roll
- Ruler
- Pencil or marker
- Scissors
- Yarn
- Optional: fishing line
1. Cut Your Toilet Paper Roll
Fold your toilet paper roll in half lengthwise (hot dog style). Mark 1-inch sections along both sides of the roll and connect the marks. You should get four sections per roll. Cut along the lines to create your pieces.
2. Prepare Your Yarn
Cut a piece of yarn approximately 12 inches long. Fold it in half to create a loop at one end, with the two loose ends on the other.
3. Attach the Yarn
Slide the loose ends through one of your toilet paper roll pieces, then pull them through the loop. Tug the ends to tighten and secure the knot.
4. Fill Your Hat
Repeat steps 2 and 3 until the entire toilet paper roll piece is covered in yarn and you can no longer see the cardboard. Once it’s full, push all the loose yarn ends through the center of the roll to the other side. This helps hide the knots and gives your hat its shape.
5. Tie Off the Top
Cut another piece of yarn and tie it tightly around all the loose ends, about 1 to 1½ inches from the top of the yarn. Double- or triple-knot it to keep everything secure.
6. Trim and Decorate
Trim the loose ends above the knot until they resemble the top of a hat. There are several ways to do this, so have fun with it! Just be careful not to cut too close to your knot. Finally, tie a piece of fishing line underneath the knot to hang your ornament on the Christmas tree or string several together to make a festive garland!
