All Aboard the Holiday Express!

All his life, Daryl Ball imagined what it would be like to sit at the throttle of a big steam locomotive. Two years ago, that dream became reality when he and his wife Nancy moved to the Black Hills and he was hired as conductor of the 1880 Train. Today, he also serves as a fireman, hostler (someone who moves the train in and out of the yard), brakeman and host. “I love my job,” Daryl said. “I can’t believe I get to do this.”

Riding the 1880 Train is like stepping back in time. Fully restored, the steam locomotive offers passengers a taste of early 20th-century railroading, with cars featuring hardwood interiors and leather seats. First opened in 1957, the train remains the oldest continually operated tourist railroad in the United States, employing around 75 people who keep the legacy alive.

Departing from Hill City or Keystone, the 10-mile route (one way) treats passengers to a narrated history of the mining districts and communities once served by the original rail line. Round trips are available from both towns, offering scenic views and a journey through the Black Hills’ rich past.

A Trip to the North Pole

From Thanksgiving through Christmas Eve, the 1880 Train transforms into the Holiday Express, a magical ride to the “North Pole.” Families board in Hill City to sip hot chocolate and enjoy other treats, while Santa spends a little bit of time visiting with every child on board. Bonus departures, called the Winter Express, run a few times after Christmas, giving extra opportunities for winter fun.

Passengers can make their ride even more memorable with a First-Class upgrade, which includes unlimited hot chocolate in a commemorative mug and extra time with Santa. Adults can also enjoy an adults-only Holiday Express in the Spiked Passenger Cars, available for individual booking or group celebrations. “The Holiday Express is one of our
most popular events,” said Laurie Wager, Director of Business Operations. She embarked on her journey with the 1880 Train 23 years ago when she started bookkeeping for the business. The holidays are one of her favorite times of the year for the train excursions. “I love it at Christmas when our grandkids ask if we are going to ride the train this year. It’s magical for them, and seeing their faces as Santa comes down the aisle is always fun to watch.” Reservations are available online or by phone, and staff recommend booking early to secure a spot.

A Top-Notch Crew

Two of Daryl’s grandsons live in Box Elder and love riding when Grandpa is at the lead. Daryl enjoys interacting with passengers, but he takes his responsibilities seriously. “You’re in charge when you’re the conductor,” he said. “You have as many as 400 people under your care. It’s very important to get everyone on and off safely.” Operating a train requires constant awareness. “You’re monitoring things all the time,” he said. “Something mechanically could go wrong. You’re listening and smelling, and the whistles are telling us things. We’re never complacent. We want people to have an incredible time.”

The crew, Daryl emphasized, is exceptional. “We’re just a small part of an incredible team of people. I’m the crazy uncle.” From the steep hills and historic towns of the Black Hills to the festive charm of the Holiday Express, the 1880 Train offers passengers a journey that’s equal parts history, adventure and — when it’s the season — holiday wonder. It’s a ride that leaves lasting memories for every traveler.
